Abstract
This research essay is about educating pre-dentistry students about the motives for a high suicide rate in dentistry. I will outline specific stressors that many dentists go through and mention the counterargument. In my counterargument, I will explain the thoughts of people that believe the high dental suicide rate is a myth and further explain why the statements made are invalid. Almost all dentists face many of the same problems, including managing an unaccompanied practice, neglected appointments, patient frustration with treatment, insurance complications, violation and regulations of governmental agencies, and the lack of quiet time. It informs readers about the amount of stress held on dentists around the world from schooling, financial issues, and owning a private business alone. From the sources used in this essay, statistical facts arise to question and enlighten people about the concerns within the dental field that tends to be left unknown. Due to the high levels of stress at the foundation of dental careers, many dentists end up having mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. These disorders additionally go hand and hand with suicide, allowing for people to place dentistry and suicide hand and hand as well.
