I honestly fell in love with dentistry after this internship. It is exactly what I want to do; helping people and building a more aware society of oral dangers. I learned how to interact with all ages of patients, the importance of sanitary and not cross contaminating the area, and how to prevent the physical and psychological dangers of being a dentist.

Today was my last day of the internship and I am very sad about it. I had fun learning about general dentistry and understanding the process of getting into a dental program. I am so thankful for this learning experience. Today I assisted fitting a crown on a patient and making a temporary crown for him as well. I even got to take a mold of one of the dental assistants mouth, which was very cool!
Today was filled with basic cleanings for most patients. Only two patients came in with more serious appointments. I got to assist in multiple fillings for one woman and extract a broken tooth from another woman.
Today the dentist office closes early so on Friday's they only schedule cleanings. While doing a basic cleaning on patients you get to see how dental care has changed drastically over the years. With cavity feelings they use to use medal fillings which contained mercury (which is the main reason why they stopped using medal fillings due to huge health risk) and now dentist use white fillings that stay on longer and are much safer to the patients health.
Could not intern due to Regionals for track and field at Liberty University.

Today was by far the coolest day I have ever had. My dentist did a couple root canals which I helped assist, but he also allowed me to watch AND assist in an extraction of a tooth connected to a bridge. At this moment I knew that I want to be a dentist for sure. It is such an amazing profession and I fell in love with it.
Today I learned how to sterilize tools that are used for each patient. I learned the importance of wearing gloves at all times. I also learned that some patients may be irritated or anxious which is why investing in relaxing candles or humidifiers are worth it to keep the patient at ease.
I also have today off from interning. I will be searching a specific field in dentistry. I am very interested in cosmetic dentistry because it perfects peoples smiles, can perform surgery, and they get paid very well.
Today I am not interning, which I am pretty sad about. I got to sleep in and now I'm watching videos of root canals for next weeks learning.
Today I learned how to tell when a cavity is present or even about to start forming. I took x-rays of a patients mouth and circled the possible sites of cavity. It is a difficult process at first, but my dentist says after seeing so many x-rays it begins to get easier.
It is day 2 and I am learning the different techniques that dentist can use when cleaning someones mouth. Most of the time dentist do not clean a patients mouth, but they still must know the cleaning procedures.
I had my first internship experience and it was pretty awesome. I got to wear scrubs and learn the different tools.
I have already contacted my mentor about the agreement forms, but I will be getting it sign on the 20th of February. We have discussed and outlined the possible activities I will be doing during my internship.
My biggest fear about my internship is working on other people because you do not know how they will react. My dentist has included me working on his teeth as part of my internship, which gives me a little more confidence in working on other people. I already took psychology, so i hope I can use it as an advantage when i actually get to work in the field.
I am currently trying to get my mentor agreement signed and outline my specific duties as an intern. I should be going to see my dentist around February 20th which is when I will get my form signed.
I am patiently waiting for may to come around so i can start my internship. I have watched some videos of basic things dentist do, and I am hopeful that i can actually pursue a career in dentistry in college.
Last week, I got my internship at my dentist office that resides in Falls Church. My dentist is very excited to educated and give me real life experiences. Another exciting point is that the other dentist in that office is also a professor at Howard University where i either plan on doing both undergrad and dental school or just dental school. He is willing to write a recommendation for me in the future increasing my chances of getting into a dental school. This opportunity not only is allowing me to gain experience, but also is outlining my future after undergrad.
I am not sure if i would like to intern with my dentist or a local dentist that is well known. I need to email my dentist for advice on my decision, and see if i could possibly work with him. I am so excited for this internship because I am unable to participate in an academy class that gives me knowledge on the job.
For my capstone project, i plan to intern at a dentist office due to my future career plans. When i go to college i will most likely major in pre-dentistry or pre-med.
